Moving to Inman or Boiling Springs? Sort This Before the Truck Arrives

Most people rent a storage unit after a move, to hold the things that did not fit. Rent it two weeks before instead and the whole move gets easier.

Here is the version that actually saves you a day.

Why does renting early help?

Because it splits the move into two jobs instead of one.

Everything you are certain you will not need in the first month goes out early, at your own pace, in your own car. Seasonal clothes, decorations, books, spare furniture, the garage. By the time the truck comes, the house is half packed and the crew is only moving what is left.

That is the difference between a full day with three loads and a morning with one.

It works at the other end too. Unpacking a house room by room is manageable. Unpacking a house with every box in it at once is how things end up in the attic unopened for four years.

What should go into storage and what should go to the new place?

Sort by when you will next touch it, not by what it is.

Things you will use inside the first month go to the new house. Kitchen, beds, everyday clothes, tools you actually use, anything the kids need.

Things you will use inside the year go to storage. Off-season clothing, holiday decorations, camping and lake gear, sports equipment, spare bedroom furniture, files.

Things you have not touched in two years are the third pile, and that pile is the point of the exercise. Moving is the cheapest time to decide, because you are handling every item anyway.

How long before the move should you rent?

Two to three weeks is the sweet spot for a local move.

That is long enough to do the early load in evenings and on a weekend, and short enough that you are not paying for months of overlap. If you are selling and buying with a gap between closings, size it to the gap and add a month.

Book it before you need it rather than on the day. A unit you have already rented is one thing that cannot go wrong on moving week.

When do you not need one?

If you are moving across town into a bigger house on the same day, and the new place has a garage and an attic, you may genuinely not need a unit at all. There is no sense paying for one out of habit.

If you are storing a handful of boxes, ask a relative first. Our smallest unit here is a 10x7, which is a room's worth of space, not a closet's worth.

And if what you are storing is photographs, artwork or leather, tell us on the phone. Our Inman units are all drive-up and are not climate controlled, which is right for furniture and boxes and wrong for a box of family photos through a Carolina summer.
