Which Drive-Up Storage Unit Size Do You Actually Need in Tallahassee?

Most people rent the wrong size storage unit because they count boxes. Boxes stack. The sofa does not, and the sofa is what decides your unit size.

Here is what each drive-up size at our Tharpe Street site actually holds, and how to tell which one you need before you book it.

What does drive-up access actually save you?

It saves the walk. Every unit here is at ground level with a roll-up door you park directly in front of, so nothing gets carried down a corridor or around a corner.

That matters most for the heavy and awkward things. A washer, a workbench, a full sheet of plywood, a chest freezer. If you have moved any of those through a building before, you already know why people pay for a door they can back a truck up to.

It also means loading time is shorter, which matters when you have a rental truck on the clock.

What fits in a 5x5 or a 5x10?

A 5x5 is a closet. Seasonal clothes, boxes of files, a bicycle, camping gear, a dorm room's worth of belongings over the summer.

A 5x10 is the size of a small bedroom. It takes a mattress set stood on edge, a dresser, a few boxes and a bike, or the contents of a studio apartment if you pack it properly. This is the size most first time renters actually need and the size most of them skip past.

What fits in a 10x10, a 10x20 or a 10x30?

A 10x10 takes one to two bedrooms of furniture. Sofa, mattress set, dining table, a washer and dryer, and boxes stacked to the ceiling around them.

A 10x20 is the size of a single car garage, and that is a useful way to picture it. It holds a three bedroom house, or a car, or a workshop's worth of equipment with room to walk in.

A 10x30 is our largest, and it exists for the loads that do not fit anything else. Whole household moves that are staying in storage for a while, a business clearing a unit, a trailer plus everything that goes with it.

When is a drive-up unit the wrong choice?

When you are storing photographs, leather, artwork or anything with adhesive in it through a Florida summer.

Our Tharpe Street site is drive-up throughout and does not have climate controlled units. For most loads that is fine. Tools, furniture, appliances, plastic bins and outdoor gear all store perfectly well in a sealed roll-up unit. But if your load is paper, leather, electronics or antique wood, ask us and we will point you at a climate controlled unit rather than sell you the wrong thing.

Renting in west Tallahassee?

Max Vault Storage Tallahassee is at 3116 W Tharpe St, just off Ocala Road on the west side of the city, in northwest Leon County. That puts us less than ten minutes from Florida State University and Florida A&M University, and close to Betton Hills, Levy Park and Waverly Hills.
